This letter to the New England Journal was about a story we read from the journal about a lady suffering greatly with many different problems and with so many different diagnosis and years of suffering . I wrote this letter to express the frustration that our medical community fails to adjust to. The subject of my article is Babesiosis, or Babesia.
I am writing this letter because my wife and I are deeply concerned for the 41 year old woman that we feel you are desperately misdiagnosing as Dercums disease. My wife read this story first and felt very moved that there is a person out there who suffers the very same overall symptoms of pain, painful sub-Q nodules, Depression, and all of what the poor lady has suffered with for so long. I have been also doctor with lyme disease for a number of years while for many more searching the right diagnosis for my ailments. We have found that with my wife being finally under the care of a lyme literate Doctor( not a doctor who saw the word in a text book) that he also had her checked for babesia. Her positive tests all came back with Borelia burgdorferi, Bartonella, and Babesia. All tick born related. We feel that my wife is under very good care now with a Doctor who also suffers great with Lyme disease there for having great respect for somebody who suffers Tick born related diseases. Part 2 will be along in a couple of days. David R Thomas
